Danish scientists believe they may have a cure for HIV “within months.”

Researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark are testing a new technique that involves flushing the virus from so-called reservoirs in human DNA.

The virus is then destroyed naturally by the body’s immune system, The London Telegraph reported.

They are expecting results to show that “finding a mass-distributable and affordable cure to HIV is possible”.

Fifteen patients are taking part in the trials, funded with $2.1 million from the Danish Research Council.

If they are found to have successfully been cured of HIV, the new technique will be tested on a wider scale.

Any cure would be affordable for many of the 33 million people worldwide afflicted by the virus.

However, despite the trials Dr. Ole Sogaard, a senior researcher in the department of infectious disease warned that the efficacy in the human body remained unproven.

Medical Daily quoted him as telling the media:

“The challenge will be getting the patients’ immune system to recognize the virus and destroy it. This depends on the strength and sensitivity of individual immune systems.”

British researchers are reportedly conducting similar research through a consortium of five universities.

Both studies are aiming to find a cure for those already infected with the virus and would not result in a preventative measure for HIV or AIDS.

As with many articles purporting possible cures it’s always good to take these with a grain of salt and practice our skepticism until the results and stats are weighed in. But if it’s anything close to being true then I am glad to see this progressing into a challenge of engineering the proper tools to fight it rather than how to fight it. Let’s hope this is followed up with success.

in fighting hiv??

it sounds like this technique would somehow prevent the virus from entering the lysogenic phase which is completely unrelated to “flushing” viral dna from the genome (which, btw, is pretty much impossible once the virus has integrated itself). while it could conceivably slow the spread of hiv throughout the body, i don’t know how effective it would be if it’s injected too late—which is certainly the case by the time one has developed aids.

i tried looking for more information because immunology is totally my jam but i just come up with more articles from fox news and ny news daily. you’d think that ~CURE FOR HIV MONTHS AWAY~ would be picked up by one of the major scientific journals at least.

so, in conclusion: the level of exaggeration in science journalism makes me want to rip my hair out

so after i made that post yesterday i promptly went to my local comic book store (where i’d previously been easily coerced into buying the first volume of runaways but that’s a story for another day) on my way to the ballet (if you guys ever get the opportunity to see a production of chroma, do it) and got this.

nothing can possibly go wrong is about a high school robotics team going up against the cheerleading team for school funding to either make it to the national robotics fair or buy new uniforms, respectively. caught in the middle between his cheerleading ex-girlfriend and his robot-building best friend is charlie, the main character.

it’s an utterly charming story from start to finish with boldly written characters and art that’s both pleasing to look at and easy to interpret. i’ve just recently gotten into comics so i’m no expert in ~how these things work~ but i absolutely loved this book. it’s fast paced and compelling throughout with the sharp dialogue and comedic timing that pru’s well known for. i found myself smiling stupidly at the book several times. it’s an extremely quick and lighthearted read (i finished it in less than an hour) and perfect for a pick-me-up at the end of a long day.

also i ship charlie and nate but like

that’s probably just me

with my shipping goggles on, perpetually.
